  1. Take 8 medium sized potatoes
  2. Get 1/2 kg ground beef or lamb
  3. Prepare 2 carrots, diced
  4. Prepare 1 can green peas

  8. Take 1 small box cheese, cut into cubes

  13. Make ready 1 small can evaporated milk

Wonderful cottage pie reminds me of the meals I had in my British school's canteen. I followed the recipe for everything except the green peas coz I do not have them on hand. I use a bigger onion instead. I forgot to dot extra butter on top but it still came out crisp with adequately brown.

Instructions to make Cottage Pie:
  1. Boil potatoes in a pot until soft/cooked. Peel once cool enough to handle. Mash while adding milk and half of the butter. Set aside for later.
  2. Cook garlic until golden brown. Using the same pan, cook onions until translucent. Set aside.
  3. Cook ground beef for 15-20 minutes or until brown. Mix cooked garlic, onions and remaining butter. Add carrots and mushrooms. Add spaghetti sauce, green peas, and cubed cheese (leave some to grate and use for topping later). You may also add green bell peppers and cooked spiced ham if you want. Simmer for 15 minutes or until carrots are cooked.
  4. In an oven-safe dish or bowl, put meat sauce and on top of it, layer prepared mashed potato mixture. Sprinkle with grated cheese and pop in the oven for 10 minutes at 350°.

There are many variations of the recipe, but the defining ingredients include minced or ground beef with onions (and sometimes other vegetables) in. This is a meat and carb heavy dish, so it goes really well with fresh side salads like a Rocket Salad with Balsamic Dressing, or a Garden Salad with French or Italian Dressing.
