  1. In a large saute pan over medium heat, cook the garlic and onions in the olive oil until the onions are translucent.
  2. Add the ground beef cook stirring until there is no more pink.
  3. Add the drained can of diced tomatoes, sugar, salt, basil, oregano, and black pepper. Mix well and let simmer for 1 hour covered.
  4. While the ground beef mixture singers, prepare the lasagna noodles according to package directions. Place in a colander and rinse well with water. Drain and set aside.
  5. Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, and the water. Continue to simmer another 30 minutes and the set aside to cool.
  6. Preheat the oven for 350°F.
  7. Grease a 9x13 baking dish with olive oil. In the bottom of the dish, thinly spread some of the meat sauce and then a layer of noodle.
  8. On the noodles, spread a thin layer of the cottage cheese and then a layer of provolone. Repeat the layers until the meat sauce is gone.
  9. Sprinkle the top with mozzarella and parmesan and bake in the oven for 30 minutes. Let rest for 15 minutes and serve.
